You are in Italy in the 13th century. Trade is flourishing between the city-states and the great cities, which are overflowing with wealth. But the city-states have weak armies, and now that the soldiers have returned home from the Crusades there is an abundance of skilled men in the country who are eager to fight. Gradually the city-states begin to hire these men, the condottieri, and fight each other for power.

The aim of Condottiere is to take four adjacent provinces. This is done through cunning card play, in which assassins, seasons, scarecrows and politicians are brought to the table. Players bid and must constantly judge how many troops each player is willing to commit to winning each province.

Condottiere is an excellent little game that is sure to put both the little grey cells and the fighting spirit to work.
