Dead of Winter

Perhaps the most popular game of 2014.

Dead of Winter is a cooperative game that places the players in the middle of a zombie apocalypse in the style of the TV series The Walking Dead. As in popular culture, the zombies in Dead of Winter mostly act as a catalyst, putting the players under pressure in impossible and life-threatening situations where constant suspicion about the other players’ motives prevails.

The game contains different scenarios, which change the way to win from game to game. The intrigue and suspicion come from the personal goals that the players are dealt at the start of the game. An individual player can only win if his or her personal goal has also been fulfilled by the end of the game. This often makes the players take irrational and counterproductive actions that conflict with the group’s common goal. Accusations fly from the very start of the game, and nobody can ever feel safe, especially because one of the players may turn out to be a traitor whose goal is to bring the other players down.

Dead of Winter is perhaps the zombie game that best captures the zombie genre, with all the intrigue, distrust and deceit that goes with it.
